“Wow! This is so cool!” Kyle squeezed Jake’s right hand and bounced on his toes.

Jake couldn’t have asked for better weather. The prediction of rain earlier in the week had failed to materialize. The tents Hank Garrison set up at the house weren’t necessary unless people wanted to escape the bright sunshine.

“Where are we going to meet everyone, Daddy?” Kayla held tight on to Jake’s left hand.

Jake still didn’t know what Olivia had said yesterday in the clubhouse, but he was thankful she had somehow convinced Kayla to attend her seventh birthday party.

“We have some tables set up near the concession area.” He and Myrna had concluded being close to the food would be the best place for the party guests to gather. The kids and their parents could come and go while having a home base to rest or grab something to eat.

“That’s good because I’m hungry,” said Kyle.

“You’re always hungry.” Kayla rolled her eyes at her brother.

Jake smiled at his children’s banter. Although today was a day to celebrate, he couldn’t help but think about Laura and the baby. Early this morning, before the kids were out of bed, Jake had gone for a long walk on his property. He thanked God for all his blessings and prayed for the strength to remain present for this special day for his children. Over breakfast, the children shared memories of their mother.

A group of people swarmed below the banner. Judging by the size of the crowd, it looked like everyone had already arrived. His shoulders slouched when he didn’t see any sign of Olivia.

“Daddy!” Kyle raced to his father’s side. “Uncle Logan said he and Uncle Cody want to take us to the rodeo. Can we go?”

“Of course you can, but what about the stunt dogs? That’s going to start at the same time.” Jake had carefully studied the schedule of events. He wanted to make sure Kyle and Kayla didn’t miss a thing.

“I’d rather see the bull riders. I see dogs all the time.” He giggled.

Jake recalled growing up in Whispering Slopes in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. His parents took him and his brothers to the state fair, where seeing everything was impossible. Kyle was smart to choose something new. “Today is your day, so you get to decide, but first it’s important for us to greet your guests. They’re here to celebrate with you and your sister.”

Kyle pulled his father toward the group. The aroma of sugary funnel cake teased his sweet tooth. Jake spotted Olivia. He narrowed his eyes and watched her talking with his younger brother Logan. He was taken
